Happy New Year

Happy New Year, my squires!

I apologize for not getting this journal out yesterday--in my defense, though, I was not only recovering from my last bit of school, my work, and having some very busy and difficult holiday plans that had to be brought on last-second, I do think taking this week off to largely relax and get into a proper "work schedule" is fine.

Besides, I had to get caught up on Marvel's What If... new season. Sure, Phase Four is pretty much a joke at this point (at least, from what I've heard), but that series is amazing, and I'm a sucker for multiverse/alternate universe stories.

In any case, I did want to mention I have been doing some stuff on the sidelines--on top of the stories I'm currently working on, I've actually been doing some collabs with heimerpwr : (one about an Aladdin AU, one about Resident Evil), and we'll hopefully get those out soon (though I still would like to finish my three stories before that).

Along with this, since one of my goals is to try and self-publish at least some work by the end of the year, I have made two of my New Year's Goals/Resolutions to a) get at least one story out a month, and b) start posting on my Patreon and Ko-Fi account a bit more (though I might research some fellow writers' Patreons to see what they offer as rewards). I'll create a journal, giving info to both sometime soon--even if I don't get a lot of support from the get-go, I think it would be good to at least let you all know they're out there and what you can expect from them.

Now, as for what I'm actually going to be writing: while these are definitely more my "primary projects" than anything else, I do have plans to focus this year on:

*The Exalted Odyssesy (Huge Crossover fan fiction between various stories I enjoy)

*The Metropolitan Tales (Parallel Crossover to the above, albeit one that deals with darker subject matter)

*ASMR RP Scripts (Pretty self-explanatory)

*"The Starsworn Archives"(Working Title)(Worldbuilding project focused on the planet of Piril and its greater universe)

Depending on what happens, I might also add on two other original projects--The Wardstone Shaman, a colonial fantasy story (albeit, this is one similar to another book I have planned, so I might not make it), and the Aetherite Archive, an alternate history/low fantasy story about humans gaining new, seemingly-magical abilities across the world during the Renaissance (and how this changes history for the world).

Again, I'd like to get to these eventually, but the top four are my primary focus at the moment. And if there are things you all would like to see more of, please let me know in the comments below.

With that said, though, I'm going to wrap this journal up. Thanks for all your support, and I hope that this year, I can return the favor by bringing you more quality work quicker!

Season's greetings and Merry Christmas, my squires!

I hope you've all had a wonderful time this holiday, whether you celebrate it, a different holiday, or just spent time with friends, family, and loved ones.

For me, it was a bit of a hassle, since my new job, combined with doing my last bit of schoolwork and going to my dad and stepmom's town at the last minute, made things a bit crazy. Still, I'm with my parents now, I finished my last class and will be getting my diploma in the next couple of months (technically, I'm getting a digital copy in January, but February is when I get the physical copy), and I can spend the weekend with my parents and doing personal work.

Did you guys get anything special for Christmas? For me, this year I wanted to go light, so I decided to focus mainly on getting money for a plane ticket to visit my grandparents in their new home (they moved earlier this year). So, I just got some treats, a new book, and some money that I could use for the ticket.

Unfortunately, while I have been able to write a bit more—especially due to my new job—I haven't gotten anything done for Christmas specifically. It's probably for the best, since it's probably better to get a routine and some work done before I do stuff like holiday specials, but I do hope I can get some new deviations posted before the New Year.

Still, since I want to leave you all with something, I do have a couple of stuff I want to share.

First, for those who don't know yet: Brandon Sanderson, one of my personal favorite authors and probably the biggest writer in fantasy right now, teaches at BYU. And in 2021, he was kind enough to record 13 of his college courses about Sci-Fi and Fantasy writing, and post them to his YouTube account for free. I am not joking—he gave everyone who is an aspiring (SFF) writer and knows about him a chance to take a crash course on writing with him, completely free of charge.

And to compliment this, I'm going to give you all the link to his writing lectures' playlist. If you check it out, I hope you enjoy and find it helpful.

Second, I wanted to suggest a new show that is out, but could use a little support. It's called "Blue Eye Samurai" and is an animated historical drama (with bits of alternate history) that is on Netflix. The story is about Mizu, a young woman of Japanese and European descent living in the Edo period of Japan (a time when Japan closed off its borders to outside nations and no one was allowed in or out), who has had a horrible life due to being seen as a monstrous outcast since birth. Desiring revenge on the European man who is (supposedly) her father, Mizu sets out to find and kill the "Four White Devils"--four European men who, in the past, did illicit trading in Japan and were around when Mizu was born. As she continues her quest, though, her own code of honor, growing friendships, and reflections on what her desire for revenge is doing to both her and those around her start to make her question what she wants to do.

Right now, the show has finished its first season, and while there is a second season confirmed (though we don't know the release date), a few articles I read indicate the creators want to do at least four seasons, but are open to doing more. While I do think the show itself has been pretty successful altogether, I also think it can use whatever support he needs. Besides... it's just a great story overall, and I think everyone should give it a chance if this seems up their alley.

Plus, I based a character off Mizu for my Piril setting, so there's that as well. ;)

For those who want to know more, here's an interview from Collider that explains a bit more about the production of the show (it might contain spoilers, though): 'Blue Eye Samurai' Creators Have a Four-Season Plan for Series (collider.com)

That's all I have for now! Thank you all for your continued support, and I hope that 2024 will be a year when I'm not only more active, but I can both make some great work for you and interact with your work as well!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, everyone!

Salutations, my squires!

There was something I had been thinking about for a while and I wanted to mention it to you all before I forgot about it. Long story short: something I’ve come to realize in recent years is that I lean more toward being an architect writer (meaning I have to plan out the stories to make them better), to the point where I’ve realized that (in general) I need to get understanding and feel for the setting I’m working on before I start making characters or stories in them. Sadly… because sometimes I’ve just tried to get stories out as fast as possible, it led me to personally trying to put the cart before the horse, and thus made it very difficult for me to understand what to have happened.

Plus… to be honest, one thing I’ve realized is that as much as I would love to create stories, I also have a fascination with worldbuilding and have (arguably) been practicing and self-teaching it long before I even knew what it was. It’s where I generally start with stories as a whole, which is why I’ve done more fan fictions as opposed to original works recently.

Due to this, I’ve decided to practice doing a “worldbuilding first, stories second,” method of writing, where I’ll design the overall setting (however large or small it might be), then focus on adding stories into it as a whole. Especially since one thing that I think plagues a lot of fantasy stories these days is the fact that certain worldbuilding depictions tend to be the same, even when the stories themselves are varied (such as how most traditional fantasy races tend to be the same overall no matter their role in the story).

For this reason: I’ve decided that for original works, I’m going to focus on worldbuilding projects first so I can get some ideas as to how I’m doing and what kind of things I can do in stories set in these universes. This could work well, especially since my original intention for at least one setting was to make it a D&D campaign setting (one which I was going to make into an official product to sell), and I could use some of these worldbuilding projects to practice creating those kinds of products. Not to mention I could use many of these worldbuilding projects to start using my Patreon account after so long.

So far, I currently have two main worldbuilding projects in mind, both set in the overall universe Piril is set in:

  • A mythopoeia (constructed mythology) exploring the religious and mythological beliefs of the world of Piril.

  • An in-universe series of documentation detailing with things like the history of the galactic civilization that Piril founded, the nature and usage of magic, the various technologies of different societies and planets, and various nations that have come into being since the cataclysm known as the Anar Dumoth.

At this moment, I am leaning more toward doing the mythopoeia first, since one poll in the past had those stories win, I have more experience reading mythological and religious texts, and it would be a fun challenge. Plus, it would help to color the religious, mythological, and folkloric aspects of my “Pirilverse” setting–something I feel is lacking in many SFF settings. Not to mention, it would be reasonably easy to create story prompts and then make them prompts for various myths or religious stories.

That being said, I do think that while I’ll still post the stories here on DA, I will also try to build a website (and probably purchase a domain) to keep both the mythologies and the documents in a separate place that might be easier, and more effective, to navigate in. Also, I will not hide the stories behind a paywall (at least, not for the most part–I might do some Patreon exclusives eventually, but even if I do, it will be for submissions that won’t be integral to the story). If anything, Patreon members will just get to see an “early access” version of the submissions than anything else.

I also will say that the Documents series is not meant to replace exposition or just show the audience the world overall–putting aside that all documents will only go to a point before any of the (primary) stories begin, the Documents are meant just to be ways to introduce the story differently. It is not, in the words of JelloApocalypse, meant to be “homework” for fans–if I do ever make my stories come across as you can’t understand them unless you also read that series, please let me know since that is not the intention.

Hopefully, I will have more submissions of the Mythopeoia series out soon–probably once I get more fanfics done and get used to my new school term. In the meantime, if there are any things you’d like to see explored in either story, let me know–I might cover it.

Have a good day, everyone!

Salutations, my squires!

Since I had some time, I wanted to update you on what has been happening in my life recently, especially regarding the whole job situation I mentioned.

First, as I mentioned, I left Amazon a little while ago. While I initially hoped to go in mid-to-late October, I decided to change it to June 17th of this year. This was due to my managers having written me up for petty reasons and the overall difficulties/mistreatment of working there. If you are unfamiliar with Aamazon’s infamous treatment of employees. In that case, many Amazon employees have spoken out against Amazon, citing abusive workplace practices, intense mistreatment by managers, unsafe working conditions, not getting paid our worth despite it being such a successful company, and more. While I can’t confirm all of the things that have been levied against Amazon, I can confirm that, for me personally, Amazon was a hellhole to work in, with challenging and confusing expectations, little-to-no actual support from managers, astoundingly terrible organization, and (perhaps worst of all) little-to-no actual signs of change or improvement despite having worked at my fulfillment center for over four years.

One great example is the last “Town Hall Meeting”–Amazon’s term for fulfillment center/warehouse meetings–I attended before leaving, where we discussed some of the events during the most recent winter. Long story short, my area can get snow, and for the last four years or so, we’ve had some bad snowstorms that sometimes made travel to our facility difficult. While I have only had problems traveling to work a couple of times, some people have been in positions where traveling to the fulfillment center was dangerous. For this winter, the managers had (supposedly) set up a system where people who couldn’t come into work could choose to stay at home without having their time off hours taken off and would even be given some money if they had to miss the whole week, provided they reported to HR about not being able to work.

However, it turns out the actual process was more complicated, as some people mentioned they had to “prove” and even fight with HR to show they couldn't go to work, and they wanted to know what happened. In response, the general manager, rather than giving any kind of straight answer–even just a, “We had so many people claim they couldn’t come that we had to be certain they were telling the truth”–instead just danced around the issue, saying Amazon wasn’t going to force anyone to come in during unsafe conditions and that these people must be mistaken. One person was even so peeved that he stood up and gave an infuriated question to the general manager, asking why HR didn’t believe them. Even after this, the general manager still didn’t give a straight answer that satisfied people, treated everything like a significant communication error, and decided to move on.

Suffice it to say, it made me glad that I chose to leave before this winter began.

But that was just one side to the issue–there were other problems. For one, even from day one, Amazon was just… never the right fit for me. It has a lot of repetitive, physical work that I find exhausting and mind-numbing. Yet, it also requires me to constantly think somewhat creatively to keep up with their insane standards, so coming home, I was (physically and creatively) exhausted practically every day. It’s one of the reasons why it’s taken me so long to write anything. Not to mention, the managers would often have me go onto other, even more physically taxing jobs day after day with little-to-no forms of gratitude outside of the occasional gift of an extra $25 or $50 (which was pretty much anything from a couple of hours to about a half a day’s wage), but they wouldn’t fully accommodate me if I had to walk a reasonable distance to another place or it took me a while to get another job. So, I would get written up for not doing any work… because I was being sent to another workplace that still needed to give me work! Moreover, not only was it physically taxing, but it was mentally degrading, as I not only was unable to do anything that genuinely felt purposeful or just enjoyable, but I also felt resentment. After all, I had gone to college (and am currently going to it again), and I was working somewhere that didn’t require one to get an education higher than a school diploma. What’s worse is how so many of my family acted as if I truly enjoyed working at Amazon (to the point where they acted as if my liking Amazon was practically a requirement for being a good worker) and was sticking around more out of loyalty to the company and/or love for the job, as well as acting as if what was happening at work was somehow me just exaggerating or being self-entitled.

And of course, there was the last issue–recently, this year, the managers had been… very harsh with me. While I will be honest and say I wasn’t the best employee and could have done many things better, I also will say that the managers’ expectations were unrealistically high for our situation. Long story short: after the last holiday season, we were so slow that we were getting voluntary time off (VTO) well into March and April at least, with many days being languid due to no actual work. And yet, the managers still expected me to have my rates be like a standard work day as if I was merely “slacking off” instead of being unable to get work period. It was insane and made me take as much VTO as possible; since I had gotten so many write-ups, I was worried that one slow day could result in me getting fired.

Part of the reason for this happening was a combination of Amazon not doing so well this year (at least at the start), and I had been working at Amazon for over four years. Long story short: my therapist gave me a link to a news/economics podcast about a year or so ago, where I learned that Jeff Bezos, the founder and then-CEO of Amazon, didn’t want there to be a high chance of people changing the company, and so made it a place where the vast majority of workers would only want to work a couple of years before leaving onto something better. Thus, most likely, the managers were trying to find ways to either fire me or get me to quit so that they could replace me with someone who would work the same for less money–as well as wouldn’t have the same level of “clout” I had, though I wasn’t all that special besides staying so long–without having to give me a pink slip, and thus go through the red tape that would cause.

Overall, it was a very stressful situation, and after I learned that some of my write-ups wouldn’t be taken off until October, I decided it was time to leave. So, I finally left and despite there being some issues, I haven’t been happier–it’s been very freeing, and I’m not only getting back into some old passion projects but have even found the time and energy to meet people IRL (something I found insanely challenging to do while working at Amazon).

With that said, I do want to go into my current plans for the future. It was a little difficult when I first got out since I had accrued some bad sleep habits, was quite busy with real-life obligations, made a dietary mistake that left me with less energy for a while, and needed to get used to being unemployed for a bit. Things are better now, and I plan to become more productive in the coming months.

In the beginning, I was hoping to try and get into freelancing as a primary job, but… that doesn’t look like it will happen shortly. Probably for the best, since I think going straight into doing a new business or starting an indie novelist career–while freeing–might be too risky at this time in my life, especially regarding things like health and dental insurance (God bless America, amirite?). Thus, I’m going to try and get a traditional job soon–currently, I’m thinking of going into healthcare. Still, I will also check out an employment agency to see if they can help with applying for jobs in general and assisting companies to find me. In any case, I will try to get into a position that can leave me with at least enough energy and, if possible, maybe even some downtime to focus on creative projects.

Speaking of which, I am finally getting back into those projects. Currently, outside of my fan fiction, I have begun to work on a freelance web design business and am looking into starting a WordPress blog and submitting some short stories to Amazon (if I can get fifteen to twenty-five done by the end of the year, I plan to release an anthology). I also want to work on a few longer works–namely my novella The Shadow of Lüdari and my full-length novel The Amythest Pact, both of which I plan to self-publish either by the end of this year or sometime early-to-mid 2024. I also want to write another book for NaNoWriMo 2023, The Bridge Society, but I’ll explain that in another journal.

I was also thinking of starting an Etsy shop, but it’s probably best if I focus on what I’m most experienced with before treading new ground. And, of course, I want to get some other fan fiction done (even have a couple nearly finished), as well as possibly start some web originals, but that’s another story.

I’ve also finished another ASMR script–a Yandere Gorgon Cyborg script–that I’ve tried to send to Vanilla Velvet Audio. She didn’t respond, unfortunately, but I at least managed to send it to her once–and I had sent it to her again since it seemed like when I sent it, she was very busy at her job and had her computer dying on her. I’ve also posted the script to ASMR Script Haven, and while all it’s received yet is five upvotes, I have also sent it to a couple of other ASMRists who I know accept script donations and have done yandere audios. Hopefully, someone will get interested in it soon! Now, though, I think it’s best to focus on some other scripts in the meantime.

Before I go, I want to mention something that is an excellent resource for aspiring writers. As part of my goal to get more writing done, I started watching Brandon Sanderson’s YouTube page, where he did a thirteen-part series that was recordings of his writing lectures in 2021. While I’ve only gotten through half of the first lecture, I’m still excited to hear more of it–especially since Sanderson is such a successful author, and I think he understands how different creators work differently. Besides… you’ll attend a class/course he hosts for free.

For those who want to see it, here’s the link to the YouTube playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLSH_xM-KC3Zv-79sVZTTj-YA6IAqh8qeQ

Also, I found a fantastic YouTuber for any of my worldbuilding fellows who want to make a scientifically accurate world: Artifexian. As with Sanderson, I’ve only started scratching the surface, but I think his information will be invaluable!

Check his YT page here: https://www.youtube.com/@Artifexian

That’s all for me for now. I hope everything is going well for you guys and the summer heat hasn’t caused too much trouble. Hopefully, things will get cooler, and events like this will further push people in power to make a more sustainable future. But I digress–have a good day, everyone, and I hope I can get more work out for you all!
